With an estimated net worth of $7 billion, it’s safe to say fashion mogul Ralph Lauren has the requisite means to build an impressive car collection. And impressive it certainly is…

The eponymous designer behind the Ralph Lauren Corporation began his love affair with unique and rarefied automobiles back in the 70s when he purchased the first car worth mentioning: a 1971 Mercedes 280SE 4.5 convertible. According to Forbes, what followed was a 1979 Porsche 930 and a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing coupe.

In the present day, the man who changed the fashion industry famously keeps a garage reportedly valued at over $350 million, featuring everything from the expected – i.e. the creations of fellow design icons Enzo Ferrari and Walter Owen Bentley – to more than one factory-built race car and other connoisseur picks.

“I’ve always seen cars as art. Moving art. While friends of mine were into paintings, I somehow felt that the real beauty of owning a rare and magnificently designed car was the fact that you can use it,” Ralph Lauren noted in a 2004 interview for a book detailing his collection.

“You can look at it, enjoy its visual qualities, as with a painting, but you can also get inside and drive it – which means both enjoying the drive itself and going somewhere with it.”

Incidentally, 17 of Lauren’s cars would later be exhibited in Paris’ The Louvre for a standalone four-month show circa 2011. Art, indeed.
