Since launching in 2009, everyone’s favourite Australian tailor P. Johnson has had touchpoints in Melbourne, Brisbane, New York, London, Jakarta, and, of course, Sydney, catering to its growing customer base on the shop floor for 17 years. Now, it finally has a home worthy of that reach.

P. Johnson’s new global flagship at 36 Gosbell Street, Paddington, a 510 square metre showroom the brand is calling the most significant retail moment in its history, comes at a time when brick-and-mortar shopfronts are becoming increasingly important to any brand operating here in Australia – a place to reach your customers and build an authentic community around your products, beyond just the traditionally transactional relationship that’s existed in recent years.

It’s fair to say P. Johnson’s nailed the brief.

The flagship will host the brand’s entire menswear collection – both the full ready-to-wear collection and custom Made-to-Measure tailoring – under the brand’s enduring ethos “a life well-lived” (where have we heard that before?).

“Gosbell Street is a house before it is a store,” Patrick Johnson said. “It is the fullest expression yet of what we’ve been building – clothes and rooms that let people feel like themselves at every volume, from a Saturday morning to a black-tie dinner.”

“We wanted somewhere in Sydney where a client could actually stay a while, be looked after properly, and feel the Australian ease and hospitality at a luxury level. That is the store we now have.”

The tailoring itself maintains much of what has made P. Johnson hugely popular in Australia’s unique style: light jackets, crisp shirting, rich silks and leathers, all pulled into a palette of refined neutrals built to be worn for years to come. It’s the brand's answer to what a modern Australian luxury house should sell beyond clothing.

And whilst this new space has been nearly two decades in the making, the unique markers of a P. Johnson showroom are still abundant throughout, with Patrick’s wife, Tamsin Johnson, taking the reins on the new space’s design and interior, as she has at every P. Johnson store since the brand’s earliest days, taking inspiration from the Australian warehouse-turned-gallery itself.
