There wasn’t much to suggest that Aston Martin’s Formula 1 driver, Lance Stroll, was just seconds away from making a surprise appearance at Crown Melbourne on Thursday night.

Of course, outside, the foyer glittered with more than half a million dollars’ worth of Aston Martin road-legal supercars – a 2026 Vanquish and Vantage S – patiently waiting for the gaze of the Formula 1 fans that were in town for the Grand Prix.

But this was Melbourne. Just days from the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. Walk through Fed Square, and you’d see F1 cars from past seasons, and even machines yet to debut, perched precariously on floating bars along the Yarra. Cars, in this city, do not always promise drivers. But for the fans that night, luck was on their side, as Lance Stroll made his way into the BOSS boutique for a live Q&A session with Boss Hunting.

Just hours prior, Adrian Newey – the era-defining car designer and Aston Martin’s new team principal – joined Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe to explain the problems with this season’s car.

“We are going to have to be very heavily restricted on how many laps we do in the race until we get on top of the source of the vibration,” Newey explained.

But Stroll arrived on the Thursday night before the race, immaculately dressed from head to toe in the third BOSS X Aston Martin collection, with a brimming smile across his face. For the more than 50 guests who had been carefully selected by the brands to witness an evening with one of the sport’s most famous figures, there was still a sense of expected optimism from Aston Martin’s main man.

“It’s very exciting,” Stroll revealed. “And it’s a privilege to be working with Adrian. He’s the best to do it in the business, but it’s still very early days. He only joined the team six months ago, so I think he’s still getting settled in, still impacting the culture, and changing the culture in many ways. It’s a team that still needs to grow a lot.”

BOSS were kind enough to dress me for the evening with Stroll, and unsprisingly, the new WI25 collection is awash with premium pieces that reflect the high-flying life of a Formula 1 driver, where luxury travel, adaptable performance, and a ready-for-anything mindset are critical. So stepping into the boutique, I felt myself standing taller, ready to host.

It’s BOSS’s third drop with Aston Martin, taking its inspiration from Sylvan Rock in the Hudson Valley. For the uninformed, this is the first private residential estate designed by Aston Martin – an architectural marvel bursting out of the changing NY foliage, with sloped roofing, floor-to-ceiling glass, and all the amenities you’d expect from a premium collaboration of this nature.

It’s the kind of spot that James Bond would go halfway through the film with a love interest for a timely story arc. It’s also a place where adventure meets downtime, where ‘luxury’ means finding the time to explore the surrounding grounds and recharge by the pool. Something a high-flying F1 driver knows all too well.

Across the collection, you’ll find indications of this enduring ethos. Each piece within BOSS x Aston Martin WI25 meets the demands of an active, luxury lifestyle. Whether that means rushing from a private jet to a paddock, or transitioning seamlessly from a morning of exploration to an evening of fine dining.

“So I feel good, I look good, and when travelling around the world, wherever we are, I’m feeling good in BOSS.”

“I mean, BOSS for me, it’s a dream. Because if I need to go to the gym, or I want to look smart going for dinner wherever we are in the world, I feel good head to toe. And when it’s time to jump on the plane and throw on a tracksuit, BOSS has everything ready to go.”

The colours used – whites, silvers, lunar and Sylvan Rock tones – also take direct cues from some of the available hues of modern Aston Martin cars, so that the wearer can carry subtle qualities from the luxury British marque into their everyday luxury wardrobe.

As a guest of BOSS on the day of the Grand Prix, I tried to keep my cool as we were brought down to the Aston Martin garage just 15 minutes into the first Grand Prix of the season. I felt right at home with my BOSS X Aston Martin cap and cotton and silk blended polo, casually standing next to Australia’s silver medal-winning Olympian, Scotty James, as Fernando Alonso’s car was brought in for maintenance. Of course, no photos were allowed, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.

The cars were in and out of the garage throughout the Grand Prix weekend, as the team tinkered and taped parts of the AMR26 to try and get the most out of the session.

Following testing in Bahrain, race day in Melbourne was a careful balance between caution and curiosity as engineers monitored the vibrations and limited the car’s running to gather as much data as possible.

The issue, stemming from vibrations within Honda’s new power unit that were damaging the battery pack, meant extended stints in the car were never going to be realistic. Instead, the focus shifted to understanding the problem and getting the car safely through the weekend.

“Adrian’s new – the magic’s not going to happen overnight,” Stroll continued. “But to have that relationship growing and to be working with Adrian, already having conversations about the car and the areas that I think it needs work, and to be able to pick his brain and get his opinion on things – it’s really amazing to be in that circle with him. It’s a very exciting time for the team.”

For all the issues that arose through these opening few days of the new Formula 1 season, the underlying mood around Aston Martin remains one of patience rather than panic. The team believes the architecture of the car has strong development potential, something Newey himself has already hinted at. And the priority now is simply unlocking it.

“It’s just very exciting,” Stroll revealed. “And it’s a privilege to be working with Adrian. He’s the best to do it in the business, but it’s still very early days. He only joined the team six months ago, so I think he’s still getting settled in, still impacting the culture in many ways. It’s a team that still needs to grow a lot.”

As a Formula 1 driver, the world will always be Stroll’s playground, but Melbourne served less as a statement of pace and more as the first chapter of a much longer story for Aston Martin’s ambitious new era.

With the latest BOSS x Aston Martin WI25 collection, Stroll had a wardrobe ready for everything the season could throw at him, whether in the garage, on the plane, or off the track. For now, the race was just the first chapter of this season’s longer story, and he was dressed to make every moment count.
