Uber Launches A Luxury Submarine Service On The Great Barrier Reef

โ€” 24 May 2019

Enjoy the Great Barrier Reef from the comfort of your own submarine with Uberโ€™s new ride share experience titled โ€˜scUberโ€™. This underwater travel option launches on May 27 and runs through until June 18, with people stying in Cairns, Port Douglas and Heron Island able to order a sub for a one hour tour of the natural wonder directly through the Uber app.

As you can imagine, ordering a submarine is a little more pricey than your standard UberX โ€“ the experience for two will set you back $3,000. To be fair, the price isnโ€™t too bad, because along with the sub ride of the reef, the cost also includes a helicopter trip to the launch point and a half-day snorkel tour.

Even better โ€“ a portion of the proceeds are being distributed to Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, a community organisation dedicated to the preservation of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Uber have also said theyโ€™ll contribute a further $100,000 to the group.

โ€œAt Uber, we believe good things happen when people moveโ€”whether thatโ€™s by getting people from A to B in their city, or by making dreams come true experiencing the worldโ€™s greatest natural wonder, the Great Barrier Reef,โ€ Susan Anderson, regional GM of Uber Australia and New Zealand, said in a statement. โ€œWeโ€™re looking forward to seeing how visitors to the Great Barrier Reef embrace this new form of movement and become advocates of the Reef for years to come.โ€

If $3k is a little outside your budget, then you can enter a competition to win a free ride in the sub for two plus round-trip flights and luxury accommodation.
