Evidently hoping to build yet another award season campaign a la The Irishman and Uncut Gems, Netflix will soon be releasing historic legal drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 with tour-de-force writer/director Aaron Sorkin at the helm – A Few Good Men, The West Wing, The Social Network, Moneyball – and a story brought to life on screens by a positively stacked cast.

Based on the real-life trial of the Chicago Seven – a group of defendants charged with conspiracy, inciting riot, and other offences “related to anti-Vietnam War and countercultural protests” during the 1968 Democratic National Convention – the subject matter of civil and political unrest could not have been explored at a more appropriate time.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 will draw upon the acting talents of Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jeremy Strong, Mark Rylance, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton, and more.

As previously mentioned, this upcoming title has been written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. The first draft of the screenplay had been completed by Sorkin back in 2007 and developing since with the original plan entailing Steven Spielberg would direct. Spielberg, however, dropped out soon after due to budget concerns and Sorkin was announced as the new director in late 2018.

The Trial of The Chicago 7 will be available to stream on Netflix starting from October 16th.
