As far as directorial debuts go, Sound of Metal certainly isn’t a bad way to introduce yourself. In fact, with the fanfare of widespread praise from countless film critics and a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score already infiltrating the conversation, Sound of Metal might just go down in history as one of the more memorable dramatic releases of 2020 (admittedly under strange circumstances). Regardless, based on the trailer above, audiences are in for something intimate, unflinching, and blistering.

The story will follow Ruben (portrayed by Riz Ahmed), who is a drummer in a musical duo known as Blackgammon alongside his girlfriend Lou (portrayed by Olivia Cooke). When Ruben begins to lose his hearing in quite an immediate fashion, he must grapple with where he stands in life, as well as with his past as a drug addiction. Naturally, relationships are tested and tear-jerking character growth is on the cards.

Ahmed and Cooke will be joined by Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff, and Mathieu Amalric. As mentioned before, this is the directorial debut of Darius Marder; who has also co-written the screenplay with his brother Abraham Marder. Previous to this, Darius Marder penned the screenplay for A Place Beyond The Pines; incidentally enough, Sound of Metal’s story was also conceived in collaboration with A Place Beyond The Pines director, Derek Cianfrance.

Sound of Metal will have a limited showing at physical cinemas starting from November 20th before becoming available to stream via Amazon Prime Video on December 4th.
