‘The Rain Room’ Phenomenon Is Coming To Melbourne

— Updated on 30 July 2021

Melbourne is known for its wet and rainy winters, but this August you can experience the feeling of being caught in the rain without actually getting caught in the rain.

The much-hyped immersive “Rain Room” exhibition from London-based collective Random International is making its Southern Hemisphere debut next month in St. Kilda.

Having previously been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and London’s Barbican, “The Rain Room” features a 100-square-metre facility where guests can walk through a continuous rainfall installation without getting wet for 20 minutes. Motion sensors in the ceiling help detect movement and create a six-metre dry area around patrons, meaning there’s no need to bring an umbrella with you.

The exhibition creators Random International have described the event as a way to “explore how human relationships to each other and to nature are increasingly mediated through technology.”

The Australian Centre for the Moving Arts has partnered with luxury hotel Jackalope to bring the attraction to Australia, with the event set to run for seven weeks between August 9 and September 29.

Adult tickets are currently on sale for AU$31.10 and can be purchased at the ACMI website.
