Itโ€™s Official: Keanu Reeves Is Returning For โ€˜Matrix 4โ€™

โ€” Updated on 30 July 2021

After months of speculation, itโ€™s finally been confirmed: Matrix 4 is a go.

Not only has the fourth film in the big-budget science-fiction franchise been given the green light, but star Keanu Reeves is returning as Christ-like saviour Neo. Carrie-Anne Moss is also reprising her role as Trinity, while original writer and director Lana Wachowski is back behind the camera.

โ€œWe could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,โ€ said Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich. โ€œLana is a true visionary โ€” a singular and original creative filmmaker โ€” and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.โ€

The original Matrix was a box office smash about robots enslaving the human race, helping resurrect Reevesโ€™ career and introducing moviegoers to โ€œbullet time,โ€ a visual effect thatโ€™s often been replicated but few would say have ever been bettered. The success of the film resulted in two sequels, 2003โ€™s The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, although neither film lived up to the critical acclaim of the first.

Wachowski is producing the film together with Grant Hill from a screenplay she wrote with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Wachowski discussed she is excited about adding to the mythology of the franchise.

โ€œMany of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. Iโ€™m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.โ€

While thereโ€™s no official word on when the film will be released, itโ€™s believed production will begin next year. Fingers crossed Laurence Fishburne returns in some capacity.
