Between Thor: Love & Thunder, David O. Russell’s star-studded Amsterdam, and The Pale Blue Eye, Christian Bale fans are eatin’ good in 2022 (the latter of which now has a teaser trailer).

Acquired by Netflix last year for a casual US$55 million, this adaptation of Louis Bayard’s historical fiction novel follows the story of world-weary detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale), who is tasked with investigating a string of murders at the famed United States Military Academy in West Point, New York circa 1830.

Accompanied by a young Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling) who – at this stage – is a young “detail-oriented” academy cadet and not the literary master of gothic horror, the events which transpire inspire his future works.

Bale and Melling are joined by Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones, Harry Lawtey, Simon McBurney, Timothy Spall, Hadley Robinson, as well as the one and only Robert Duvall. The cinematography has been accomplished by the very talented Masanobu Takayanagi (Silver Linings Playbook, Warrior, The Grey).

This haunting thriller has been written and directed by Scott Cooper (Black MassCrazy Heart), and marks his third official collaboration with Christian Bale. The longstanding creative partnership kicked off back in 2013 with Out of the Furnace, followed up with Hostiles in 2017.

Once upon a time, the duo were set to undertake yet another production dubbed Valhalla, which was kept under very tight wraps, as well as an adaptation of Jess Walter’s Over Tumbled Graves before tackling The Pale Blue Eye. Since the initial announcement, however, we haven’t heard a peep about either projects, so it’s safe to assume they’re on ice (for now).

The Pale Blue Eye is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on December 23rd of 2022 before hitting Netflix a few weeks later on January 6th of 2023 – check out the first teaser trailer above.

The Pale Blue Eye synopsis:

West Point, 1830. A world-weary detective is hired to discreetly investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case — a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe.
