  • The newly-dropped Small Things Like These trailer previews Cillian Murphy’s first role feature-length role since his Academy Award-winning performance in Oppenheimer.
  • Murphy has reunited with previous collaborators from both Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer.
  • Small Things Like These release date: November 8th, 2024.

After taking a well-earned victory lap for his Academy Award-winning efforts in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, we’ve finally gotten a proper look at Cillian Murphy‘s next big screen role.

While the trailer for Small Things Like These doesn’t showcase much of his actual performance, it does paint the film as a pretty intimate and emotional story against the backdrop of dreary mid-1980s Ireland; quite possibly a rich ground to once again flex his dramatic prowess.

Based on Claire Keegan’s best-selling novel of the same name, Small Things Like These follows Bill Furlong (Murphy), a coal merchant in a small Irish town. When he discovers a disturbing secret related to the local covenant, he’s forced to reckon with his past, the complicity of his fellow townsfolk, and the overbearing influence of the Catholic Church.

Murphy is joined by Emily Watson, Michelle Fairley, and Eileen Walsh.

Reviews for Keegan’s internationally best-selling novel have described it as a “sublime, emotive story,” “emotionally quiet but powerful,” and a “profoundly moving and universal story.”

Cillian Murphy’s involvement in the film was announced back in March 2023 — well before he picked up his first Oscar win for Best Actor. Speaking with Deadline, he stated, “I’m honoured and thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Claire Keegan’s magnificent novel to the screen.”

Behind the camera, Murphy has reunited with Peaky Blinders director Tim Mielants. The screenplay was adapted by Enda Walsh, another frequent collaborator, who co-wrote Steve McQueen’s harrowing Hunger starring Michael Fassbender, which depicted the 1981 Maze Prison hunger strike.

There’s also a partial Oppenheimer reunion here as well — the project is being produced by Artist Equity, the production company owned by former co-star Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Small Things Like These doesn’t have an Australian release date (yet), but it’s set to hit US theatres on November 8th, 2024 — check out the trailer above.
