Unless youโve been living without an internet connection, youโll have heard of the artificial intelligence-powered tool thatโs been taking the world by storm: ChatGPT. Launched just three months ago and developed by Microsoft- backed startup OpenAI, the seemingly miraculous ChatGPT already has a competitor from the information giant itself Google. Now, Google has announced plans to launch its very own AI-powered program called Bard.
While Bard is not yet available to the public as it undergoes final testing, Google CEO Sundar Pichai explained in a blog post the scale of his ambition with the service, stating that, โBard seeks to combine the breadth of the worldโs knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models.โ Certainly not a little side project, then.

โSoon, youโll see AI-powered features in Search that distil complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web: whether thatโs seeking out additional perspectives (โฆ), or going deeper on a related topic,โ said Pichai.
โThese new AI features will begin rolling out on Google Search soon.โ
With Microsoft understood to have made a US$10 billion (AU$14.4 billion) investment in OpenAI off the back of ChatGPT, thereโs little wonder that Google isnโt wasting any time in getting skin in the hottest new game. Despite being one of the best money-making machines in history, ChatGPT is a direct threat to Googleโs supremacy over the information landscape, potentially offering users more direct and straightforward access to the information theyโre seeking.
With two of the largest players in the game already vying for dominance in the AI-powered information space, it feels like a new era of knowledge is being born before our very eyes. With ChatGPT already winning hearts and more importantly, minds, weโll have to wait for Google to publicly release Bard to see how close this race is going to be.
