If there’s one thing Ferrari doesn’t do, it’s casual.

With a specific brand of both passion for the game and religious zeal that you’ll only find in Maranello, the Prancing Horse’s creations exist to remind you that it deals in art as much as it does engineered speed.

The latest testament to this very pathos comes in the form of the one-off Ferrari SC40: a bespoke love letter to the F40 in full mid-rear-engined V6 hybrid glory.

Manufactured by the Special Projects division for a single deep-pocketed client, the SC40’s silhouette borrows just enough from its 1987 inspiration to evoke the right kind of memories – that long, prowling nose, the short, squared-off tail, the fixed rear wing that could cut a small cloud in half – but the execution is entirely its own.

Design don Flavio Manzoni and his Styling Centre team have essentially taken the icon’s raw geometry and reinterpreted it with the cold precision of contemporary Ferrari design. The result is aggressive but elegant, muscular yet deliberate.

Underneath, the SC40 rides on the chassis and drivetrain of the 296 GTB. Which means this thing isn’t just a pretty face; it possesses the architecture to move like a proper Ferrari should. A 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 hybrid setup – mated to an eight-speed F1 DCT gearbox – delivers roughly 819 BHP to the rear wheels, rated to do the 0-100 dash in 2.9 seconds, and capable of clocking a top speed north of 330 km/h.

Aerodynamics were never an afterthought – the bodywork flaunts reimagined NACA ducts, oversized air intakes, and those smoked Lexan engine-cover louvres that give you a peek at the mechanical heart beneath. That fixed rear wing isn’t just theatre, either – it’s structural intent rendered in carbon.

“The visual rhythm of the design is defined by vertical lines that precisely outline the crisp edges of the front wings, door cuts, and engine cover,” notes Ferrari.

“These vertical strokes form a subtle underlying grid, structuring the car’s visual tension almost like a musical score.”

Duck inside and you’ll find this baby is stripped-back and brutal in the best possible way. Carbon-Kevlar panels, charcoal Alcantara, and red Jacquard fabric define the cabin. The materials aren’t there for show, they’re there for tactility and purpose. Even the paint is a one-off mix dubbed SC40 White.

Ferrari claims the goal wasn’t to “create a literal reinterpretation” of the F40 but to honour it with a ride that comes with its own distinct personality (mission accomplished). Think of the SC40 as less an homage and more of an evolution – a refreshing take on heritage in an era of dull reboots, rehashes, and cheap nostalgia-baiting.

While you’ll have to try your luck out in the wild to spot the one-of-one SC40 in the carbon, its styling buck will be on display at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello starting from October 18th, 2025.
