Although it was demolished in 1968, the original building Frank Lloyd Wright built for Tokyo’s emblematic Imperial Hotel carves a rich legacy. And given we’re coming into the 100-year anniversary of the original building in 2023, the team behind Imperial Hotel has decided to unlock that legacy for exclusive stays, giving guests the opportunity to sleep in the aptly named Frank Lloyd Wright suite which, for architecture enthusiasts, is a very rare chance to fully immerse themselves in Wright’s unimpeachable brilliance.

When Frank Lloyd Wright built the Wright Building for Imperial Hotel, the structure served as one of the earliest examples of Mayan revival architecture and is widely considered one of his finest works. The blend of Eastern and Western architecture has been preserved with the hotel’s entrance and lobby reconstructed in the Meiji Mura architecture museum in Nagoya, but other than that only a few pieces of the original construction still stand.

And this includes the Frank Lloyd Wright suite, a 214-square-metre luxury room with original designs and motifs from Wright’s career. The suite incorporates the design of the Wright Building, with original carpets, furniture and lighting all mirroring the architect’s private residence in the US.

It’s a patchwork of Wright’s greatest hits, so the speak, and while the man himself didn’t design the room, it serves as an homage to his work with everything from carpet to the moldings, furniture and lamps based on Wright’s design sketches.

Guests booking into the suite will be given an exclusive concierge service and a daily drink service at the building’s Old Imperial Bar, which also includes original 1923 Wright design. Perhaps most importantly, the all-you-can-drink minibar is stocked regularly with whiskey and Japanese sake along with other choice tipples.

The Frank Lloyd Wright suite package also includes daily breakfast, in-room check-in and check-out and a traditional tea ceremony and is only available for bookings between January 24, 2023 and March 31, 2024 at a rate of US$10,850 (~AU$15,272) per night.
