  • Reed Hastings, Netflix’s co-founder and co-CEO for 25 years, is set to open a private ski resort in Utah called Powder Haven.
  • Spanning 12,000 acres, Hastings has already sold 39 units on the property and has recently offered an additional 34 sites for sale.
  • Most lots are between two and five acres and cost an average of US$4 million (~AU$5.6 million).

When Reed Hastings stepped down from his role as co-CEO of Netflix in 2023, his retirement wasn’t a move to slow things down; it was a shift in focus. In addition to becoming Netflix’s Executive Chairman, he bought 12,000 acres in Utah’s Wasatch Range and decided to open Powder Haven, which he plans to turn into one of America’s most exclusive ski resorts.

After selling the first 39 lots on the property in just a few months, he’s now opened the books again to offer a further 34 custom homesites, ranging in size from two to five acres. Before the year’s out, another eight turnkey chalets will become available, as well as the option of larger, 6,500 square foot homes around the corner.

All properties have the option of a bespoke design, with Hastings’ team working with CLB, Lloyd Architects, and Walker Warner on the design and construction. The homes promise ski-in, ski-out living, big decks, Wasatch-coded lines, and views that are more than worth the average price of US$4 million (~AU$5.6 million).

Despite the warp-speed rollout of the development, Hastings is making sure not to lose the sense of intimacy and calm he fell in love with when he first visited the mountain. Powder Haven will cap membership at 650 families, maintain 2,700 acres of private terrain for owners, and leave 5,300 acres open to the public (carefully managed to dodge lift-line chaos).

In addition to the home sites, all necessary infrastructure is also being swiftly developed, with three private lifts now running and a fourth set to get spinning this winter. Serving as a central hub for the community, the team will soon break ground on a 73,000 square foot clubhouse that’s designed by Hart Howerton, featuring dining spaces, a spa, fitness centre, bowling facilities, and even climbing walls.

It might sound like an unusual retirement project for a man who’s made his fortune in the world of media, but Hastings has long had skin in the game after two decades of skiing around Park City. In essence, he wants to recalibrate what luxury ski living can mean, offering exclusivity without the peacocking and contemporary architecture with genuine mountain soul.

If you’ve ever wanted your own blank canvas at altitude, this is the moment to carve in.
