The 2019 Eat Drink Design Awards Have Announced Australia’s Most Exquisite Venues

— Updated on 28 September 2021

Australia’s most stunning venues have once again been celebrated at this year’s Eat Drink Design Awards. The annual event pays tribute to the best-designed establishments across the hospitality industry, with the 2019 edition dominated by venues located across Melbourne.

This year’s judging panel was made up of some of the biggest names in the design world:

  • New York Times restaurant critic Besha Rodell
  • Studio-Gram Architect and Co-Founder, Graham Charbonneau
  • Artichoke Editor, Cassie Hansen
  • The Mulberry Group CEO and Founder, Nathan Toleman
  • Architect Phillip Schemnitz

Some notable winners included Blacksmith Providore Lake Mulwala which took out best bar design for their ’70s-style Southern Californian estate. Collingwood ice cream store Piccolina was awarded best retail design, while Port Fairy’s Drift House and Brisbane’s The Calile Hotel tied for best hotel design.

Speaking on what swayed their choices the jury said, “there was one word that arose over and over during our deliberations: restraint. The principle of restraint marked every single winner, as well as many commendations, though it was expressed in myriad ways.”
