Best On Binge In April 2024: Our Top Picks

The Sympathizer

The story follows the Captain (Hoa Xuande), a North Vietnam plant in the South Vietnam army. He is forced to flee to the United States with his general near the end of the Vietnam War. While living within a community of South Vietnamese refugees, he continues to secretly spy on the community and report back to the Viet Cong, struggling between his original loyalties and his new life.

Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, this A24 project has been described as an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese Communist spy simply known as “The Captain” during the final days of the Vietnam War.

In addition to portraying “several antagonist roles” — ranging from an up-and-coming congressman and CIA operative to a Hollywood power player — Robert Downey Jr has also executive produced The Sympathizer alongside his wife Susan Downey.

The forthcoming limited adaptation has been co-developed and co-created by Don McKellar in collaboration with celebrated South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook of OldboySnowpiercer, and Decision To Leave fame. The duo have also juggled writing, directing, and executive producing duties.

Past Lives

Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrest apart after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. Decades later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront destiny, love and the choices that make a life.

Despite going home empty-handed from the 2024 Academy Awards, this emotionally-wrought indie darling from first-time director Celine Song is one of the most memorable films in recent history. A stunning cinematic achievement that can only be characterised as a stone-handed gut punch to any of you out there with unresolved feelings for an old flame. Proceed with caution.

Taboo

Adventurer James Keziah Delaney (Tom Hardy) returns to London during the War of 1812 to rebuild his late father’s shipping empire. However, both the government and his biggest competitor want his inheritance at any cost… even murder.

Controversial opinion, this is Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight’s greatest series. Not Peaky Blinders. It also features Tom Hardy’s most impressive performance to date, and we won’t hear otherwise.

How Are Things Looking For Binge Australia In April 2024?

Not bad. And that’s a great thing to say about a streaming service release schedule in early 2024.

Things are looking up for Binge with plenty arriving in April to clear the stink of HBO’s The Idol… and stave off boredom until House of the Dragon season 2 finally arrives.

As always, Binge has an immense library of content already so I’d be surprised if you’ve exhausted everything that’s already on the streaming service.

You’ll also want to check out what’s coming next month on Netflix Australia, Stan, and Amazon Prime.
