- Tony Hawk recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the first Pro Skater game via Instagram.
- The legendary skater also teased “there will be a future” for the beloved franchise.
- The post came just weeks after he revealed an Activision collaboration was in the pipeline.
It’s hard to understate the impact of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games.
The series made Tony Hawk a household name among non-skateboarders and played a major role in boosting the sport’s popularity throughout the late 1990s.
Those original Pro Skater games were (and continue to be) some of the best releases for the PlayStation 1 and PS2, and depending on how much you played them, their soundtracks are probably responsible for 90% of your music taste.
Which is why in celebration of the first THPS game’s 25th anniversary, Hawk set aside some time to reflect on how life-changing the project was for him and the skate industry.
“My intention and expectation for the game was mostly for the enjoyment of skateboarders,” he wrote on Instagram.
“I had no idea it would transcend a niche market to become a massive success and — as some have argued — change the course of skateboarding’s popularity (and possibly even skate trick evolution).”

Closing out the post, Hawk got a bit cryptic, hinting at a possible return for the series:
“I’m not supposed to tease anything else about the future of the series, but there will be a future.”
Last month, Tony Hawk was a guest on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, where he alluded to a new project with Activision (“It’ll be something the fans will truly appreciate.”).
While we can only speculate on what this new project will be, 2025 will mark the 10th anniversary of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 — so if isn’t another Pro Skater game, it’d be great to see Activision continue remaking the original series.
As far as game remakes go, it doesn’t get much better than Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2. Developed by Vicarious Visions and released in 2020, they represented one of the year’s biggest releases, selling over a million copies in its first week while picking up wins for Best Sports Game at the Gamescom and The Game Awards.
Despite the success, remakes for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 were unfortunately cancelled when Activision merged with Blizzard. A damn shame given those two sequels — particularly THPS 3 — perfected the formula laid out by the first two titles and represent high points for the series.
Here’s hoping we’ll get to see them shred again.
