- Sony has unveiled Ghost of Yotei, the highly anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.
- The game will follow a new protagonist and, once again, takes place in Medieval Japan — about 300 years after the previous game.
- Ghost of Yotei is due in 2025 (exact date TBA).
There have been rumours of a Ghost of Tsushima sequel floating around for a few years now, but we finally have an official announcement. During its latest State of Play presentation, Sony capped its signature new release showcase with a trailer for Ghost of Yotei — and it’s quickly rocketed to the top of our ‘Most Anticipated’ list for 2025.
Ghost of Yotei still takes place in medieval Japan: a little over 300 years after Tsushima, with players assuming the role of a brand new Ghost named Atsu. Set in the region around Mount Yotei, the game’s open world is an area filled with “sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers.”

Ghost of Tsushima‘s gripping story and combination of stealth-action gameplay easily made it one of the best games of the 2020s, so our expectations for this sequel are pretty high. According to developers Sucker Punch, Ghost of Yotei is the first game that they’ve built from the ground up for PlayStation 5, and it certainly shows.
While the trailer gives viewers a taste of combat gameplay, it’s mostly cinematic footage of Atsu: as she travels through incredibly lush settings, in a historic period roughly corresponding to the Tokugawa Shogunate. (This era was recently also the backdrop of FX’s multi-award-winning prestige drama, Shogun.)
Not that we’re complaining — what we saw looks stunning. If this game plays as half as well as this preview looks, then we’ll no doubt see it on a fair few ‘Best Of 2025’ lists. While we don’t have an exact release date, Sony announced that Ghost of Yotei is due out sometime in 2025, exclusive to the PS5 — check out the trailer above.
During the State of Play presentation, Sony also announced a remaster for Horizon Zero Dawn, a release date for Monster Hunter Wilds and Hitman: World of Assassination VR.
