At this point in the year, who among us is really surprised that yet another highly-anticipated release – film or otherwise – is being pushed back? Yes, that’s right. Cyberpunk 2077 has once again been delayed, this time to December 10th, marking the third instance game developer CD Projekt Red has pulled the rug out.

Referring to what we’ve filed under “Tweets which have aged like unrefrigerated milk”, CD Projekt Red promised that Cyberpunk 2077 would face no further delays earlier this month. But delayed they have, and now, like an absentee father during the summer holidays, a promise has been broken; and everyone is sitting on the curb with their swimmers on, waiting for a launch day patch (read: trip to Jamberoo that will never come).

“The biggest challenge for us right now is shipping the game on current-gen, next-gen, and PC at the same time – which requires us to prepare and test nine versions of it,” studio heads Adam Badowski and Marcin Iwińsk stated via Twitter – the “nine versions” being Xbox One/X, Xbox Series S/X, PS4/Pro, PS5, PC, and Stadia.

“We need to make sure everything works well and every version runs smoothly. We’re aware it might seem unrealistic when someone says 21 days can make any difference in such a massive and complex game, but they really do.”

Cyberpunk 2077 was initially slated for release on April 16th of this year… then September 17th… then November 19th… now December 10th. And what goodwill CD Projek Red has accrued with past deeds – i.e. producing The Witcher series – as well as the prospect of a “groundbreaking” flagship title with Keanu Reeves’ involvement is the only buffer preventing fans from cannibalising the developer.

With expectations mounting by the day, you’d certainly hope this “amazing game” players will apparently “fall in love with” proves worthwhile come Christmas. The only certainty at this stage, however, is that crunch time has just been kicked up a notch.

Cyberpunk 2077 may have been delayed, but these PS5 launch titles are still on track for November 12th. Check them out now.
