Two major details about Deadpool 3 have just been dropped by the merc with a mouth himself, Ryan Reynolds, in extremely typical fashion. That is, typical of the perennially irreverent Hollywood actor turned gin baron turned Welsh football team owner.

The first juicy tidbit involves the all-important release date: Deadpool 3 is currently scheduled to hit cinemas on September 6th of 2024. The second involves Aussie icon Hugh Jackman reprising his career-defining role as James Howlett / Logan / Wolverine of X-Men fame. Yes… this is really happening.

“Hey everyone, we’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next Deadpool film for a good long while now,” Ryan Reynolds announced on social media; the footage cuts to a faux inspirational montage.

“I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning.”

“Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I…” — record scratch moment.

“I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea.”

“Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Ryan Reynolds asks as Hugh Jackman casually walks by in the background, brushing his teeth as he walks up a staircase.

“Yeah… sure, Ryan,” Jackman responds.

The introduction of Jackman’s Wolverine to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) post-Disney’s Fox acquisition perfectly aligns with Kevin Feige’s well-publicised intention to integrate the X-Men during the coming phases; speculation places the latter’s MCU debut to be anytime between Phase 5 to Phase 7.

And already, there’s been flirtations with (re)making the concept of mutants canon. For example, it was recently confirmed that Namor the Sub-Mariner (Tenoch Huerta), who features as a villain in the forthcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is depicted as a mutant. Additionally, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hailed the return of yet another X-Men alum: Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier / Professor X.

Deadpool 3 will also mark an onscreen reunion for both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, as well as their respective Marvel characters. The duo first appeared together as Wade Wilson (Deadpool) and James Howlett / Logan in X-Men: Origins – Wolverine (2009), an entry of the Fox/Marvel franchise which the Deadpool duology has not only acknowledged through its signature lens of meta humour, but also openly mocked.

Once again, the Deadpool 3 release date is September 6th of 2024 (keep an eye out for news updates and the eventual trailer here).
