Gonzo journalism is being kept alive and well by Channel 5’s roaming finger on the pulse, Andrew Callaghan, who is taking his viral content to the next level with a currently untitled HBO documentary about the January 6 insurrection.

For the uninitiated, Callaghan rose to mainstream prominence by embedding himself within the fringes of American society via All Gas No Brakes. Due to a contractual dispute with Doing Things Media, which wanted to franchise the hit web series and effectively kill its independent spirit in the process, Callaghan and his team decided to walk away from the YouTube channel circa 2021 to rebuild elsewhere. In an effort to preserve everything he stood for, Channel 5 was born.

Topics covered by Andrew Callaghan & Co have ranged from the downright silly (i.e. Flat Earth conferences, porn conventions, Chet Hanks), somewhere in between (i.e. anti-mask gatherings during the height of COVID-19), to the far less silly (i.e. George Floyd / Black Lives Matter protests, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine). All with a surprisingly sincere and open-minded approach, free of judgement, criticism, or ridicule beyond Channel 5’s signature dry humour. Journalism in the purest sense, if you will. Now that you’re up to speed…

The headline-making doco will follow Andrew Callaghan’s “wild RV journey through America in the months leading up to the January 6 Capitol Riot.” While none of the footage has been publicly unveiled at this stage, the world received something of a preview eight months ago when Channel 5 uploaded an interview with the Q Shaman (real name: Jake Angeli). Angeli is now serving a 41-month prison sentence for his role in the riots.

Andrew Callaghan has directed and executive produced his forthcoming HBO documentary in collaboration with indie powerhouse A24. Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim of Tim & Eric fame have also signed on to executive produce alongside the likes of Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, Ali Goodwin (Strong Baby Productions), Dave Kneebone and Janel Kranking (Abso Lutely Productions), as well as Max Benator.

HBO has yet to confirmed a release date for Andrew Callaghan’s January 6 documentary. But it couldn’t come sooner.
