  • We’ve received a creepy first look at Ryan Coogler’s supernatural Southern Gothic film Sinners.
  • Coogler reunites with frequent collaborators Michael B. Jordan & Ludwig Göransson.
  • Sinners release date: March 2025.

Over the past decade, Ryan Coogler has firmly established himself as one of the most exciting directors currently working. Judging from the first trailer for his latest film, Sinners, that streak isn’t going to be broken any time soon.

Directed and written by Creed and Black Panther filmmaker, this Prohibition-era horror film sees him re-teaming up with Michael B. Jordan, who stars alongside himself as a pair of twin brothers (I feel like there’s a trend here); in addition to Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo.

According to the official synopsis, Sinners follows Smoke (Jordan) and his twin brother (also Jordan) as they return to their hometown in 1930s Louisiana. Hoping to escape their past troubles, they soon stumble into an even greater evil. Some early reports of the project have mentioned that it might involve vampires, but there are no blood-suckers to be seen in this first trailer.

While the plot details may be light, the Sinners trailer delivers atmosphere in spades. With a strong Southern Gothic aesthetic, it looks unnerving as hell. From a lot of quick chaotic cuts to a panicked man begging to be let inside and a foreboding voice-over that warns: “You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s going to follow you home.”

Ludwig Göransson, another serial Coogler collaborator, has scored the film; the former having recently taken home the Academy Award for Best Original Score thanks to his work on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer — his second after winning for Black Panther.

It’s strange to think that this is Coogler’s first non-franchise film since his feature-length debut, Fruitvale Station, back in 2013. Not that he hasn’t been working hard since then — Creed set a high bar for what legacy sequels can and should be, while Black Panther is one of the better Marvel movies. We’re certainly interested to see what else Coogler can do when he’s not playing with someone else’s toys.

Sinners hits Australian cinemas in March 2025 — you can watch the trailer above.
