  • Alexander Volkanovski is among several high-profile names previewed in the first trailer for Paramount and Legendary Picturesโ€™ star-studded Street Fighter movie.
  • This live-action affair will see the real-life UFC champion portray โ€œJoeโ€ โ€“ an underground karate champion featured only in the original 1987 Capcom video game.
  • Street Fighter movie release date: October 16th, 2026 (international).

Two-time UFC Featherweight Champion and inaugural B.H. Magazine cover star โ€“ Alexander Volkanovski โ€“ has been one of several recognisable players selected for Legendary Pictures and Paramountโ€™s live-action adaptation of Street Fighter. And if the first trailer screened at this yearโ€™s Game Awards is anything to go by, nobody will be taking themselves too seriously (in the best possible way).

The Australian mixed martial arts icon portrays none other than Joe, an underground full-contact karate champion who only appeared in the original 1987 Capcom video game, with a lush head of blonde hair and all. Canonically American, Joe represented one of eight computer-controlled opponents in the Street Fighter tournament.

โ€œActing. I love acting, so Iโ€™ve been doing a bit of it,โ€ Alexander Volkanovski told B.H. when prompted about his post-UFC plans earlier this year.

โ€œI havenโ€™t had a movie role yet, but there are always talks. A lot of interest. A lot of people throw things our wayโ€ฆ Iโ€™m a big fan of Jason Statham. I feel like I could pull off a Jason Statham vibe.โ€

โ€œCould we play in the same movie? I donโ€™t know how. How would that work? How would I play that role if heโ€™s already in it? If they need two Jason Statham-type guys, Iโ€™ll put my hand up.โ€

Incidentally, the production was initially set to be helmed by a pair of Volkanovskiโ€™s fellow Aussies, Talk To Me and Bring Her Back directors Danny & Michael Philippou. But the former YouTubers have since been replaced by Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip), who worked behind the camera from a screenplay penned by Dalan Musson (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Captain America: Brave New World).
