Big man on campus, Idris Elba, has taken a step back from being in front of the camera… to start calling the shots behind the camera. And by the looks of this trailer, it seems as though both are a natural fit to the modern day thespian.

With Yardie comes his directorial debut, and this ain’t a cotton-candy  covered marshmellow directorial debut either. This is one with grit, character, and yes, a little residual blood under its fingernails.

Adapted from a novel of the same name, Yardie follows the story of the Jamaican-born Dennis “D” Campbell, who rises from the humble Kingston social housing yard subjected to poverty, and eventually become a “mad-dog” drug kingpin set to spark a war in London. The Wire vibes, anyone?

The film stars Sense8 and Maze Runner actor, Aml Ameen as the lead, supported by Stephen Graham (Snatch, This Is England), and Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth).
