HBO will stop making documentaries about true crime and cults when we stop watching them. Until that day, however, streaming queues around the world can expect more binge-worthy additions like Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults – a detailed exploration of the titular religious group based on a fascination with UFOs and [spoilers] rose to notoriety through a series of co-ordinated ritual suicides (among other equally batshit insane reasons).

As per the official synopsis from WarnerMedia:

The docuseries is a thorough examination of the infamous UFO cult through the eyes of its former members and loved ones. What started in 1975 with the disappearance of 20 people from a small town in Oregon, ended in 1997 with the largest suicide on US soil and changed the face of modern New Age religion forever. This four-part docuseries uses never-before-seen footage and first-person accounts to explore the infamous UFO cult that shocked the nation with their out-of-this-world beliefs.

The documentary series has been directed by Clay Tweel (The Innocent Man, Print the Legend, Out of Omaha) and produced in collaboration with both CNN Original Studios and Campfire.

Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults will premiere in its entirety via HBO Max on December 3rd – Aussie viewers should expect it to hit Binge soon after.
