Starward’s Tawny #2 Special Projects Ballot Is Closing Soon

It’s that time of the year again – Christmas morning for Aussie whisky lovers. Back by popular demand (and likely three or maybe even four times a year from now on), Starward distillery is about to drop yet another special projects release – this time it’s the Tawny #2.

Historically, these cult classic drops sell out across the country faster than you can say “single malt.”

After ginger beer concoctions and shiraz barrels from South Australia in 2021, the mad hatters at the Port Melbourne distillery are revisiting their sell-out release of the Tawny #1 (awarded the Best Worldwide Whisky at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2020).

For 2022, Starward’s Head Distiller, Sam Slaney, and Starward Founder, David Vitale, have brought back the Tawny fortified wine casks for a second time, now in a 700ml bottle compared to the original’s 500ml.

Like Tawny #1, this new special projects release was fully matured in Tawny fortified wine casks (both fresh and charred). Distillers then threw in some puncheon and hogshead barrels, which allowed them to showcase the vibrant tropical notes of their classic Starward spirit.

Tawny #2 immediately embraces dried raisins and toasted oak on the nose. Brown sugar and rich dried fruits come through on the palate, as cosy spices deliver a slow and lingering finish. Could this be a rival to Nan’s fruit cake? So they claim.

But here’s the kicker. There are a limited number of bottles going around, which means the ballot is back. It closes on February 28 (this coming Monday) and the ballot will take place on March 1. All successful applicants will be notified via email. Following the ballot, there will be a select number of retailers who will stock some bottles of Tawny #2 from 15th March, although they will be hard to track down. Each bottle of Tawny #2 will retail for RRP $149.
