Melbourne’s New Late-Night Cocktail Bar Is Banking Big On Tequila & Mezcal

Opening just a few days ago, the plainly-named Tequila Bar by Mejico is the latest laneway hotspot in Melbourne for late-night drinkers who edge towards agave when it comes time for a nightcap. With Mejico, originally from Sydney, now firmly established as one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in Melbourne, the late-night venue above it is surely bound to become equally as frequented by the city’s late-night crowd.

It’s been a while since the city has opened up a new laneway bar worth shouting about. So this new Melbourne bar, open until 3 AM every weekend, should be well worth checking out for anyone cruising around Pink Alley in Melbourne CBD late at night. Much like Mejico beneath it, Tequila Bar will be serving up more casual Mexican fare like Daylesford beef brisket empanadas and chicharrones along with over 250 varieties of Tequila and mezcal – reportedly one of the largest selections in the country.

Beaming with neon lights and sharp edges, Tequila by Mejico has apparently been in the works for awhile but pandemic-driven delays pushed the bar back a few years. It not only acts as an extension of Mejico, but positions itself as one of the only spots in Melbourne where Tequila and mezcal lovers can find some of the more hard-won varieties of agave liquor including 7 Leagues d’Antano Extra Anejo, aged seven years, and the full range of El Jolgorio mezcal. Beers, wines and sangria are features on the drinks list as well, but you’d be wasting a visit if you weren’t using it to explore agave beyond the usual suspects.
