It was back in 2017 that luxury juggernaut LVMH purchased a stake in the Gallardo family-owned Volcan tequila business, adding the premium and drop to its wine and spirits stable just as the market for high-end agave spirits was hitting global growth at scale. Within the brand’s offering, however, was the ultra-exclusive X.A variety that for several years was only found in the best clubs and restaurants in the world. Now, it’s finally available to everyone.

Volcan de mi Tierra isn’t your everyday blanco or reposado tequila, with a rather special history tied to its birthplace in the lowlands of Jalisco, Mexico, where it shares a name with a volcano that erupted 200,000 years ago and created the rich volcanic soil ideal for growing blue agave. With elevated basalt and iron content in the soil, the agave that grows in the area has a unique taste and sees Volcan’s reposado, añejo and extra-añejo blended X.A tequila one of the best there is.

Matured in lightly toasted virgin American oak barrels, when Volcan X.A tequila was first launched it was only available to enjoy in selected restaurants and nightclubs in hotspots such as New York City, St. Tropez, Las Vegas, and Bodrum, driving desire for the rare tequila simply because of how hard it was to experience. Finally, it’s a little easier to come by with the refined tequila now available to the public via a limited number of retailers, allowing everyone to see what all the fuss is about. Volcan X.A tequila is priced at US$228 (AU$340) per bottle.
