Regular readers of Boss Hunting will be well aware that as I write this, a young man by the name of Nedd Brockmann is currently running down a highway, hunting glory, suffering and $1 million in donations to support homelessness in Australia. Supporting Nedd as he runs the entire width of our great country from Perth to Bondi Beach is none other than Puma, who have kitted out the remarkable electrician from head to toe, including with a couple of sets of their performance running shoe – the Deviate NITRO 2.

It’s a pretty serious undertaking to try and run 4,000kms across Australia, which is why Nedd needs the very best support when he’s on his feet as much as when he’s put them up for the day. From his coach, physio and massage therapis, to his family and the punters cheering him on from the side of the road, everything needs to be as good as it can possibly be. There’s just no margin for error.

With this continent-crossing scenario in mind, it makes sense that it was the Puma Deviate NITRO 2 which Nedd picked off the shelf as one of his only companions for ten hours of hurt everyday. Because while Puma makes a number of great shoes, the Deviate NITRO 2 is a class above the rest when it comes to well-cushioned footfalls and energy efficient propulsion.

With an upper constructed from mesh and Puma’s proprietary PWRTAPE reinforcement strips, it’s both breathable and supportive, making the shoes ideal for long sessions on the grind. However, it’s the midsole unit that these runners really come into their own, made from NITRO Elite foam that is lightweight and responsive.

Inside the NITRO Elite foam is a carbon composite plate that runs the length of the shoe and delivers a pop of energy transfer with every stride, optimising the efficiency of each footfall to ensure the smoothest and fastest form you’re capable of. Equally specific to the task at hand is the durable rubber compound that makes up the high-traction outsole, working to keep you upright in even the slipperiest of conditions.

While we don’t have the specific number of pairs that Nedd has worn through over the 3,000kms he’s ticked through so far, it’s safe to say they’ve served him very well so far, with just under 1,000kms to cover. Available in a number of different colourways, the Puma Deviate NITRO 2 is currently available with an RRP of $280.
