Brighton is probably best known for its beach boxes, roundabouts, and octogenarians, but it’s also home to some of Melbourne’s finest properties. Of those at the top, 86-88 Wilson St in Brighton is certainly up there with the very best of them, as a relatively new build that brings with it a suite of contemporary luxuries as well as a sense of old-world charm.

The palatial property spans a sizable double block of approximately 1,340-square-metres with a main residence that contains no less than five bedrooms, five bathrooms, plus an impressive nine-car underground garage. All of this and just a half-hour drive from the centre of Melbourne’s CBD.

As you arrive at 86-88 Wilson St, you’ll be immediately awed by the grand wooden gates that open to a view of the three-storey stone facade, topped off with an attractive interpretation of a Mansard-style roof. Large floor-to-ceiling windows allow light in from almost every angle, while the upper levels feature a number of balconies that overlook the well-kept gardens below.

Through the large double entrance doors and you’ll find yourself in an expansive foyer space with American Oak parquetry floors, the centrepiece of which is an enormous German-made chandelier around which the four-storey spiral staircase wraps its way around. There are a pair of modest living rooms at the front of the home, while the larger formal dining room is a little further into the residence, before it opens up to a warm and comfortable open-plan living and kitchen space with Ralph Lauren wallpaper.

The home was designed three years ago by renowned Jon Friedrich Architects, while the interiors were designed by the acclaimed Mim Design (both to spectacular results). The large marble-covered kitchen features premium appliances from the likes of Miele, La Canche, Sub-Zero, and Liebherr, as well as a separate butler’s pantry for entertaining.

There’s a single guest room found on the ground level, but moving up the stairs to the first floor and you’ll find another three smaller bedrooms, as well as an absolutely enormous master bedroom complete with a dressing room and ensuite — each of which is actually larger than some of the smaller bedrooms. That’s right. The master bedroom, ensuite, and dressing room covers nearly 95-square-meters, which is more than twice the size of an average one-bedroom Melbourne apartment.

Continue up the stairs from the master bedroom and you’ll find yourself at the jewel in the crown of this stunning home, which is a large rooftop terrace that could easily hold several dozen guests if you happened to be entertaining. The lower ground level is almost equally impressive, featuring a home cinema, fully equipped gym, games room with a fully functional bar, and even a wine cellar to keep your favourite bottles stored properly.

Returning to the ground level at the rear of the residence is a large veranda for alfresco dining. Or simply a cocktail after work. From the veranda, you’ll be able to walk directly into the pool or adjacent spa, with the slightly sunken full-sized tennis court further to the rear of the property.

While Brighton is home to more than a couple of special homes, 86-88 Wilson St really is spectacular from every angle. The property was recently listed for sale by Hocking Stewart with a price guide of between $14.5 million and $15.5 million and is currently seeking expressions of interest.
