Getting out of bed full of energy each day isn’t always going to happen, but if you’re waking up feeling fatigued regularly, then the second generation of Citizen’s CZ Smart smartwatch might have a feature to help. In addition to running Wear OS 3 for Android (and is also compatible for iOS), this latest model uses an AI-powered “self-care advisor” to track sleep and alertness and provide recommendations, using tech that was originally developed by NASA and IBM Watson.

Before we get into the details of the CZ Smart YouQ app, the basics of this Citizen smartwatch include two sizes of either a 44mm Sport model or a 41mm Casual mode, and comes complete with the usual suite of apps including Google Fit, Strava, Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Alexa and more. Announced at the CES 2023 conference, it also arrives with a 1.28-inch OLED display, all the connectivity and sensors you’d expect and is powered by the Snapdragon Wear 4100 Plus chip.

Now, the CZ Smart YouQ app uses neural networks that were originally developed by the IBM Watson computer system, which will assess your chronoype after gathering about a week of data about your sleep habits (basically, do you naturally rise early, sleep later, etc). This is paired with NASA’s Psychomotor Vigilance Test (originally designed to measure fatigue levels in astronauts), which combines to deliver an assessment of your rest quality and daily alertness.

WIth this alertness picture, Citizen’s CZ Smart smartwatch can the serve up pointers and suggestions for how to improve your sleep levels, boost your energy and more. This isn’t rewriting the rulebook when it comes to what we expect from our smartwatches, but its level of detail and specificity hasn’t really been seen in this form before, providing users with even clearer information about what they need to do to feel better day-to-day.

With a total of 11 new watches in the catalogue for 2023, offering different sizes, colours and styles, there’s a lot to like about the direction Citizen is taking their smartwatches. With an RRP that starts from $350 and goes up to $435 for the more robust models, they aren’t the cheapest on the market, but they’re more value packed than a lot of other smartwatches out there today.
