The ongoing collaboration between IKEA and Sonos keeps rolling on with the head-turning Symbfonisk Floor Lamp Speaker, due to launch in January 2023. And, at least on paper, it seems like this will be the best collaborative effort from the two companies to date, combining IKEA’s design know-how with Sonos’ firm grip on high-fidelity audio in the latest iteration of the Symfonisk series.
Mind you, this is a series that has so far given us some impressive kit like a picture frame speaker and a small bookshelf speaker. The collaborative collection has also given us a desk lamp as a speaker before, but never something like this.
The IKEA and Sonos Symfonisk Lamp Speaker is easily the biggest device from the collection, presenting as a slender standing lamp that’s got a lot of height behind it with a thick 360-degree speaker sitting below the actual lightbulb and shade.
While home tech innovations have been running rather stale lately, this lamp speaker looks like a breathe of fresh air at the intersection of premium tech and home decor. IKEA has designed the device with a simple tripod base that elevates the speaker, reaching up through the device, topped by a bamboo-weave light shade to diffuse light.
The shades are reportedly going to be available in different colours and the ideal set-up would be grabbing two of the lamb speakers (like in the photo above) given they can be used to create a stereo pair or as part of a more advanced home theatre set-up.
“The Symfonisk floor lamp speaker is a great example of how our collaboration continues to challenge the traditional idea of sound in the home,” said Sara Lincoln, principal product manager at Sonos, who also stated that the speaker has been designed by Sonos to be able to connect to all other speakers in the Sonos range, including the Sonos Ray soundbar, Sonos Move and Sonos Roam.
The IKEA x Sonos Symfonisk Lamp Floor Speaker is available from January 2023. Australian availability is yet to be confirmed, but the worst-case scenario would be Aussies having to wait a few more months before the latest Symfonisk speaker hits our shores.
