Six years ago, Samsung put its competitors on notice with a radical (and mainstream) reimagining of what a smartphone could be. Daring, innovative, and somehow still practical, the Galaxy Z Fold was born.
With every subsequent iteration, the South Korean tech giantโs R&D has not only markedly improved the Fold, but also defined the product category; and in 2025, the sum total of all that investment has paid off with an apex evolution.
This is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7.
Officially unveiled at Samsungโs Unpacked event in Brooklyn, while it doesnโt exactly break the mould, it almost certainly perfects it. The Fold7 is a refinement in the truest sense โ slimmer, faster, smarter โ and now feels even less like a party trick and more like the legitimate productivity tool hardcores have known it as.
As the most physically streamlined and lightest Z Fold to date, the Fold7 measures just 8.9mm when shut (4.2mm unfolded) and weighs 215g (less than the Galaxy S25 Ultra). In terms you can mentally grasp, itโs finally sidestepped the โbulkyโ accusations that plagued earlier generations and is near-comparable to your regular non-foldable smartphones in form factor.
How this has been achieved is through a complete re-engineering of the hinge mechanism: a lighter โFlexHingeโ multi-rail architecture with fewer moving parts and enhanced materials for durability. On the topic of the tough factor, it also still carries IP48 water resistance with greater dust protection.
The inner display stretches a touch further (approximately 11% more to be exact), now eight inches of Dynamic AMOLED 2X diagonally with even slimmer bezels and a new aspect ratio; and more importantly, the crease is all but gone.
Brightness, on the other hand, has been pushed to 2,600 nits โ putting it in the same league as Samsungโs top-end slabs, while maintaining that smooth and adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. Essentially, multitasking is cleaner, slicker, more intuitive, and not an issue under the full glare of the sun.
Outside, the 6.5-inch cover screen retains its practical dimensions, with the added benefit of a new anti-reflective coating and fine-tuned touch response.
Under the hood, youโll find Qualcommโs best-in-class Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 for Galaxy, backed by a workhorse-worthy 12 to 16GB of RAM, the foundational One UI 8, and offering storage options up to 1TB. Samsung notes thermal management has been given a technical bump, and early impressions suggest sustained performance under load is significantly better than the Fold6.
Battery life also sees a quiet yet important upgrade. The 4,400mAh dual cell now leverages smarter AI-assisted power allocation, learning usage habits and adjusting on-device processing accordingly โ in fact, itโs rated for 24 hours of continuous video play on a single charge.
The real game-changer this year (as with many of Samsungโs more recent devices) lies in the software.
Weโve said it once, and weโll say it again: Galaxy AI isnโt a gimmick โ and itโs integrated throughout the Fold7โs experience. Live Translate for phone calls is seamless and available offline in multiple languages. Note Assist can summarise handwritten notes into clean, editable text. And for the professionals armed with a Fold7, AI-powered multitasking learns your app habits and intelligently pre-loads them in split view.
Granted, the camera system hasnโt really been touched in a meaningful way (the hardware has long existed within the Samsung ecosystem). Although it does benefit from meaningful modifications. The main sensor is now a flagship-calibre 200MP, using pixel binning for better low-light shots and dynamic range. Autofocus is faster, and the AI-enhanced Pro mode brings DSLR-like tweaks to the main camera.
In short, expect ultra-clear snapshots enhanced by Samsungโs next-gen ProVisual Engine.
Like we said before, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 isnโt a dramatic reimagining, though nor has it honestly needed to be since the original debuted in 2019. In an era where smartphone victories are notched by details as opposed to the leaps and bounds of yesterday, Samsung has iterated where it really counts: making the device thinner, lighter, and smarter while sanding nearly every rough edge that made previous models feelโฆ experimental.
The Fold7 feels final โ a foldable thatโs no longer distinguished by its novelty, but by its genuine utility.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is now available to pre-order in Blue Shadow, Silver Shadow, Jet-Black, and an online exclusive Mint, with Australian pricing starting at $2,899. Devices will begin shipping on August 1st. And for those whoโve been watching from the sidelines up until this stage, it might be time to take the plunge.
