Given its reputation as one of the world’s most fashionable countries, we always expected France to bring the heat with its 2024 Olympics uniform.

But the host nation hasn’t just understood the assignment — based on the preview offered during Paris Fashion Week (and this latest lookbook), they’ve set the pace, raised the bar, and launched the javelin all the way to the outer field.

Equipe de France’s flashy threads have been conceptualised by Stéphane Ashpool, founder and lead designer of Parisian streetwear label Pigalle, and produced by legendary sportswear brand Le Coq Sportif (which was also responsible for France’s 2022 Winter Olympics uniform).

Stylishly flaunting the national colours with an ultra-modern gradient motif, this extensive collection of athletic gear ranges from letterman-style jackets, warm-up tracksuits, judo gis, and jerseys, to skate shoes, tennis racquets, fencing faceguards, bows, and even kayak bodies.

According to GQ, this considerable undertaking routinely encompasses 800 athletes requiring 120 items each. All of whom want to look “luminous,” “modern,” and “pop” as well as showcase an “element of heritage.”

“And the one thing they all said was this: that the road to the Olympics is like this,” Stéphane Ashpool explained to the renowned lifestyle publication while making an undulating gesture with his hand.

“So some of the gear has these curvy yarns,” he added while highlighting the rippling stripe along the length of the track pants and across the back of the jackets.

While the visual aspect has been finalised, there’s still much to do in terms of logistics and actual production between now and when the summer games officially kick off in late July.

Ashpool continued: “I’m still in the middle of the game. I know the people are going to wear it, and I think, halfway through the games, I’ll be able to breathe.”

Though safe to say, this is an early victory for the home team.
