Warranted as they may be, your fears surrounding the entire franchise’s would-be “sanitation” in the wake of Disney acquiring 20th Century Studios are (thankfully) unfounded. During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin Feige confirmed once and for all that Deadpool 3 will be R-rated, marking the MCU’s first-ever R-rated release.

“It’s amazing. And we’ve got Hugh Jackman coming back for our first Deadpool film within the MCU,” remarked the longstanding President of Marvel Studios when prompted about the fact he’d begun his superhero movie career producing the original X-Men films.

“That’s our first R-rated film. To have Hugh come back is incredible. For me, personally, that is where I started. I remember sitting behind the camera — well behind the camera — at his audition for the film. It was his first on-set audition, and he flew up to Toronto to do a read with Anna Paquin.”

“For him, and for me, and I think for all of the fans of Marvel, it’s unbelievable what has happened in those 23 years. It’s very full-circle having him come back in this new Deadpool film.”

Prior to the confirmation of what everyone had assumed was simply a given, Deadpool screenwriter Rhett Reese assured fans the threequel wouldn’t be “Disney-fied.”

“They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know? It’s not like any particular joke may be the one that they say, ‘You know, that’s too far,’ that could happen. But to this point, it’s been nothing but support,” Rhett Reese told The Playlist last year.

“It’s been nothing but, ‘How can we help you?’ What from our universe would you like to use? How can we make your life easy? And we’re gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool. We’re not… this is not going to be the Disney-fied Deadpool.”

“They’re not gonna mess with the tone. I mean, I’d never say never. I guess there’s an outside chance. But we’ve always been told it can be R-[rated] and we’re proceeding as if it’s R… I don’t think that’ll change.”

The R-rated Deadpool 3 starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth and Hugh Jackman as James Howlett / Logan / Wolverine is currently scheduled to hit cinemas on September 6th of 2024.
