If there’s one thing Apple TV+ are doing extremely well right now, it’s science fiction shows. Having now enlisted the dramatic talents of both Australia’s own Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, it would appear they have another winner on their hands with Dark Matter.

Not to be confused with the 2015 Syfy series of the same name, this forthcoming adaptation of the best-selling novel, penned by Blake Crouch, casts Edgerton as Jason Dessen — a physicist who finds himself plonked into an alternate version of his life.

The Jason Dessen from another timeline has cracked the code for multiversal travel; and has decided to steal the original Jason’s life. Now, the latter finds himself combing through “a grain of sand on an infinite beach,” in the hopes he’ll be able to reclaim what’s rightfully his with Alt Jason’s wife Amanda (Alice Braga) in tow.

As hinted at by the first trailer, this endeavour isn’t as simple as peeking through the doors of other alternate Jason Dessens. From frozen tundras to post-apocalyptic Chicago, think of it as Fringe meets Quantum Leap (RIP to the reboot) meets Taken.

Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, and Alice Braga are joined by Jimmi Simpson as Ryan, Oakes Fegley as Charlie Dessen, Dayo Okeniyi as Leighton, with Amanda Brugel as Blaire. Apple TV+’s Dark Matter has been created by novel author Blake Crouch, who also executive produced alongside Edgerton himself.

Keep an eye out for this one in your Apple TV+ streaming queue next month, more specifically on May 8th when it’ll premiere with two episodes, and check out the Dark Matter trailer above.
