If there’s one thing to take away from the first trailer for Downey’s Dream Cars, it’s that Robert Downey Jr is a genius.

After pocketing around half a billion dollars from his incredibly lucrative and career-defining stint with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the beloved thespian who brought Tony Stark / Iron Man to life could conceivably retire today and never accept another acting gig unless he was really interested.

So what’s the latest project the retired Avenger has chosen to take on? Well, rather than having to memorise lines and potentially spend another second in front of a green screen, he’s convinced HBO Max – now rebranded to the vomitous monosyllabic “Max” in some horribly misguided decision – to greenlight an unscripted series where they restore + mod his own classic car collection all on the company dime. A real Adam Sandler move, if you ask us.

As per the official description:

Robert Downey Jr loves restoring classic cars. But he’s also become dedicated to fighting climate change. So he’s bringing his beloved old cars into the future, making them faster, more powerful, and more efficient while keeping their souls intact.

“We are what we drive, and having amassed a formidable collection of classic cars over the years, I was a petrol-spewing mess. And a hypocrite, as I’d founded the Footprint Coalition in 2019 to scale technologies that mitigate climate change. Fortunately, I’m a bit of a dreamer,” RDJ himself expressed in a press statement.

“The last three years have been an experiment in hope, as I engaged the best and brightest minds to evaluate, educate, elevate, and decarbonize these vehicles in a way that demonstrates the limitless potential of creative problem-solving.”

“It was a huge challenge and an enlightening journey. It’s also just fun to watch, and for that, I must credit my kids, my wife and boss Susan, Team Downey, Boat Rocker’s Matador Content, and of course, Max and Warner Bros. Discovery. Thanks for supporting what, at times, seemed a blurry vision, but ultimately confirmed the myriad ways we can join hands and create a sustainable future.”

Like we said, he’s going full Tony Stark. The only thing that’s really missing is the ultimate clean energy concept: the fictional Arc reactors.

Downey’s Dream Cars featuring Robert Downey Jr is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max / Max next month (June 22), expect it to hit Australia’s Binge and Foxtel around the same time – check out the trailer above.
