The Boys season 3 trailer that premiered during SXSW 2022 – which was later flagged for explicit content online over 20 million times – might not have offered much in the way of an explanation for what was coming. But the latest preview dropped by Amazon Prime Video certainly provides a measure of clarity. For better or for worse. Whatever happened to teasers that had the balls to leave you hanging?

As it turns out, our favourite super-powered psychopath and leader of The Seven, Homelander (portrayed by Antony Starr), hasn’t quite recovered from the discovery his ex-girlfriend Stormfront (portrayed by Aya Cash) was an actual Nazi – “Just a man who fell in love with the wrong woman,” he tells the press with a brave face while unravelling from within. Nor has he quite recovered from watching his own son execute said ex-girlfriend in a concentrated blast of heat rays.

Billy Butcher (portrayed by Karl Urban), on the other hand, has opted to level the playing field with what appears to be a modified Compound V. And while its effects may be temporary, a man of his conviction, rage, and skill-set will certainly be able to do a whole lot of damage in just 24 hours.

Then there’s the matter of Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy. This time around, we’re served up a little more than a glimpse of the legendary original supe. The major takeaway? The man isn’t stable. In a psychological or atomic sense. One can only imagine what will come of the direct collision course he’s on with both Homlander and Butcher.

“Every dent, every scratch, every mark tells a story,” Jensen Ackles writes on Instagram, the caption attached to a post of Soldier Boy’s shield.

“A story that ends with me winning.”

True to the promise of Laz Alonso, who portrays Marvin T. Milk / Mother’s Milk, The Boys season 3 will be even bloodier than season 2 – and the proof is in the pudding red band trailer.

“I’ll put it to you this way,” Laz Alonso told Collider around this time in 2021.

“I was talking to the head makeup artist and she’s in charge of ordering the blood – that’s one of her many jobs.”

“When you talk about bulk, I don’t think they used over a gallon of blood in season 2, believe it or not. [The Boys] season 3, we’re already at three and a half gallons of blood [so far]. So that should give you a little indication of where it’s going.”

Of course, blood content is just the tip of the iceberg. Previous to Alonso’s little tidbit, creator and showrunner Eric Kripke also confirmed that The Boys season 3 will also be upping the ante by tackling a borderline X-rated storyline: ‘Herogasm.’ Slated to be given the full live-action treatment during the sixth episode of the forthcoming season, Kripke announced the wildly NSFW event via Twitter.

“From day one, everyone dared me to make this episode,” tweets Eric Kripke, accompanied by a picture of the script which has been written by Jessica Chou.

“Challenge met, motherfuckers.”

The story arc depicts Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), and Frenchie (Tomer Capon) sneaking into a secret annual party hosted by Vought – the eponymous ‘Herogasm’ event. As briefly alluded to in the pilot episode’s club scene, it involves an entire weekend of superhero orgies, drug use, and general debauchery on a secluded off-the-grid island resort.

Considering what we’ve seen already – i.e. head-crushing oral sex, supe with a prehensile extendo penis, The Seven’s leader Homelander and his numerous issues – one can only imagine the levels of spiciness Eric Kripke has in store for us. Amazon’s iteration of The Boys may not have been a completely faithful adaptation thus far, although it sounds as though season 3 will ensure some core elements remain.

Onto the release date, you can expect the first three episodes of The Boys season 3 to hit streaming queues on June 3rd of 2022 (tonight) – check out the full-length trailer above.
