Sydney’s First Affordable Art Fair Will Sell Works Starting From $100

Affordable Art Fair

Plenty of people want to become art collectors, but many – reasonably – find getting started a bit overwhelming. It’s an expensive habit to lean into, which is why accessible art fairs are usually the entry-point for many who want to start elevating their homes and offices with works from local and international artists. For over two decades now, the Affordable Art Fair has been one of the major institutions for anyone looking to tread the endless path of art-buying, with showcases held in major cities around the world including London, New York, Brussels, Melbourne, and – new for 2022 – Sydney.

There are various websites and galleries out there that attempt to make buying and collecting art more accessible to a wider audience, which always benefits both artist and collector. The Affordable Art Fair is one of the better known and more dependable institutions when it comes to this, with a reach that is virtually unmatched and a sincere goal of connecting art to buyers with full transparency.

Compare this to many traditional art galleries, where asking after the price feels like a faux-pas. At the Affordable Art Fair, each work is clearly labelled with the price whether it’s a painting, print, or sculpture. Pieces start at $100 and are capped at $10,000, encompassing thousands of artworks from both emerging and well-established artists.

Melbourne has hosted the Affordable Art Fair before, and will once again later in the year when it runs from September 1st to 4th at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. While Sydneysiders have always needed to travel interstate to score a bargain on some valuable art, locals can now rest easy as the fair takes over the Winx Stand at Royal Randwick Racecourse from 2nd to 5th June.

More than 35 Australian and international galleries will be exhibiting as part of the Affordable Art Fair, which means there’ll be plenty of options from the likes of Sydney’s Studio Gallery, Harvey Galleries, Wentworth Galleries, Rochfort Gallery, and Fern Gallery, as well as interstate favourites like Queensland’s Toowoomba Gallery and Victoria’s Salt Contemporary Art, Art to Art, and Antoinette Ferwerda Gallery. The range of artists represented across all of these well-known Australian art galleries is vast, varying in style, age and background.

Sydney’s Studio A, which is known for supporting artists with intellectual disabilities, will also have a presence at the Affordable Art Fair, alongside a showcase for younger artists under the age of 35.

There should also be guided tours of the exhibitions, which is the wisest choice for newbie art buyers given these art curators are usually more than happy to share tips on how to pick art for your home for any budget.
