International provocateur outfit MSCHF is back at it again, this week announcing a collaborator in Mercedes-AMG to coincide with NYCxDesign. In something of a fusion between automotive engineering and avant-garde design, MSCHF has unveiled a collection that transforms auto parts into functional art, recycling luxury car parts into a line-up of one-off homewares.
The Not for Automotive Use collection takes its inspiration from Italyโs Radical Design counterculture movement of the โ60s, features 11 unique works including a BBQ grill, a chair made from headrests, an AMG-branded coat hanger, and even a functioning fan made from a carโs wheel. The showstopper is undoubtedly the black velvet lounge chair, with Mercedes-AMG headlights embedded into the armrests.
Inspired by MSCHFโs visit to AMGโs headquarters, the collection uses new parts sourced from AMG vendors, but itโs not about literal recycling. Instead, MSCHF has set out to explore the โcontextualisation or misuseโ of automotive components, to striking effect.
โWe kicked off the project about a year ago, and our initial design exercises began from looking at a pile of car parts,โ said MSCHF co-chief creative officer Kevin Wiesner. โWe wanted a balance of furniture types in the collection, but also to prioritise the physical actions we had the most fun with when we were playing with the pieces.โ
MSCHF has earned a name for itself by releasing more than 100 different art projects in recent years, including cologne that smells like WD-40 lubricant, Birkinstocks leather sandals made from Hermรจs Birkin bags, and an artwork titled Museum of Forgeries that offered 1,000 framed Andy Warhol sketches (999 of which were fake and one of which was genuine).
In addition to the one-off pieces within the collection, MSCHF has also created a clothing capsule collection to celebrate the partnership with Mercedes-AMG. The MSCHF x Mercedes-AMG collection will be on display at the art collectiveโs studio showroom in Brooklyn from May 15 to 17.
