As a country, we consistently punch above our weight when it comes to producing world-class grog, and the prestigious 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition only serves as a proud reminder of that sentiment. More specifically in the case of local gins from Wharf St Distillery (NSW) and Ginny Pig Distillery (SA).

Not only have Wharf St Distillery’s Citrus Gin and Ginny Pig Distillery’s Botanic Gin been awarded Double Gold in their category alongside drops from the usual homegrown suspects (i.e. Archie Rose)… both have been selected as one of three finalists for the Best In Class and Best Overall Gin awards, which is to be announced at the Top Shelf Awards Gala & Grand Tasting.

“It was a complete shock to wake up on Tuesday and see we were named in the top three for our Citrus Gin,” said Wharf St Distillery Co-Founder Tim Cooke.

“We’ve only been distilling gin for a year, so hoped we’d at least win a medal when we entered, but to potentially be recognised as Best in Class is pretty exciting.”

Here’s how the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition Judging Panel described both entrants:

Wharf St Distillery – Citrus Gin (42% ABV)

Citrus on the nose with noticeable but mild juniper notes. Very earthy on the palate, with pronounced citrus and juniper flavours. Smooth and viscous, with lingering juniper notes and a gentle but persistent pepperiness on the finish.

Ginny Pig Distillery – Botanic Gin (44% ABV)

Pronounced juniper notes and citrus notes on the nose. Sweet on the palate featuring juniper, citrus, and some slight earthy notes accompanied by a steadily growing pepperiness. Long, sweet juniper finish with a lingering chilli-like pepperiness.

Wharf St Distillery and Ginny Pig Distillery are set to compete against London’s Berry Bros & Rudd and their No. 3 London Dry Gin (46%) ABV for the top honours at Top Shelf Awards Gala & Grand Tasting, which is scheduled to be held from June 16th to June 17th at Resorts World, Las Vegas.

In the meantime, you can sample both the Citrus Gin for just $86 and the Botanic Gun for just $70 to personally decide which is best the greatest in your books.
