The Rockpool Team Is Opening A Steak Frites-Only Restaurant Next Month

Hunter St Hospitality’s forthcoming venue, 24 York, will follow the Chazz Michael Michaels playbook by sticking to one dish and one dish only: steak frites.

Set to open at the former Bavarian site in Sydney CBD with Rockpool executive chef Santiago Aristizabal at the helm, aside from the headliner – 220g MB2+ scotch fillets from Gippsland producer O’Connor and chips with chimichurri, peppercorn, mushroom, or umami butter (priced at $48) – the only add-ons available include a green salad and cheesecake tart for dessert.

This extremely pared-down menu also only features four wines, which you can enjoy by the bottle and the glass.

“At Rockpool in Melbourne, you pay $95 for 400g on the bone, which is around 350g bone off,” Aristizabal explained of the value proposition to The Sydney Morning Herald.

“The steak at 24 York is only one marble score lower [than Rockpool].”

While 24 York is obviously an antipodean answer to the likes of Parisian bistro Le Relais de l’Entrecôte – which has famously championed a steak frites-only menu for over six decades – it also follows suit with local establishments like Alfie’s by Liquid & Larder (Bistecca, The Gidley).

The stripped-back steakhouse on Bligh Street exclusively serves 220g Riverine sirloin ($39) that’s butchered on-site, grilled over ironbark and charcoal, as well as being plated before you within 15 minutes of ordering. In yet another rule-breaking move, bookings only afford you 90 minutes at the table.

The most notable difference between 24 York and Alfie’s, however, is that the latter offers seven more sides (full and half portions), a daily rotisserie special, two more desserts, and another wine option.

Precisely a month from today on July 23rd, we’ll know for certain which reigns supreme.
