Heading down into a subterranean bar to drink mead out of a medieval drinking horn and gnash on some truly delicious steak isn’t a common experience in Australia. And yet that’s exactly what PlayStation wants you to do in a fairly inventive way to promote the new God of War: Ragnarok, which has already been claimed as a masterpiece by early reviews. PlayStation has partnered up with Norse-inspired restaurant and bar Mjolner to curate the themed dining experience, centered around a nine-course ‘Discover the Realms’ menu that’s being served in both Sydney and Melbourne this month.

I should preface that nine-course bit. This isn’t a nine-course degustation; it’s split between God of War-inspired cocktails and dishes, all worked up by the team at Mjolner to reflect the nine realms of Norse mythology that are brought to life by Santa Monica Studios in the new PlayStation exclusive.

Available until November 20, the a la carte menu dances between hearty meat dishes and a lot of cocktails using mead in interesting ways. This ranges from drinks like the ‘Myths of Midguard’ with PX sherry, black walnut bitters, egg white and mead to a massive dry aged scotch fillet with rich bottarga sauce inspired by the in-game land of the giants.

It works like most themed menus, really, but the difference here is that the Mjolner team has shown a great amount of creativity to bring the new God of War game to life and turn the game’s settings into a cuisine you don’t often see in Australia. Then you’ve got the venue itself, where Mjolner couldn’t be better suited for a Viking-inspired video game given its tastefully-done mythical interiors both in Sydney and Melbourne.

If the God of War menu sounds like it’s up your alley note that it’ll only be available until Sunday, November 20.
