Songbird and magnetic personality – John Mayer – has long been a fan of the Land Rover Defender, which is why he was asked to take centre stage for a bit of sponsored content. And what I will say is this: as far brand shoutouts go, Land Rover couldn’t possibly have asked for a better – or more organic – endorsement.

In true John Mayer fashion, his attempt to reconnect with nature is irreverent, hilarious, authentic, and ends with a song. ‘A Simple Song’, to be exact – which he composed for himself on his birthday back in 2014 (fair warning, it’s likely to stir sentimental feelings). This may be sponsored content, sure, but if every ad spot were like this, it’s safe to assume we’d all part with our money a hell of a lot easier.

“I don’t think you can come out here and get any other message from yourself than, ‘You’re alright… You’re okay.’,” says the musician.

“There’s always this moment when you’re about to leave and go out into nature where you feel a little crazy for doing it. Then if you keep going, you start laughing, you start turning on the music, and you become, like – joyous.”

Given what you’re about to experience and Talking Watches with Hodinkee, I think it’s high time a Netflix or an Amazon give old Johnny Boy his very own documentary series where he aimlessly roams the world. Something in the space of Anthony Bourdain or, indeed, Jeff Goldblum.

Enough talk, watch John Mayer be John Mayer on behalf of Land Rover in the video above.
