A little over a year since Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery premiered on Netflix, we’ve now received a key update on Knives Out 3 from director Rian Johnson.

“It’s coming along,” he recently told The Wrap.

“I obviously couldn’t work during the [Writer’s Guild of America] strike, and now that it’s over, I’m diving in full force, and so it’s coming along.”

Johnson added: “I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head. It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing.”

The previous instalment saw private investigator Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) unravelling a sinister conspiracy behind a murder mystery game hosted by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) at the titular Glass Onion — Bron’s high-concept mansion on a private island in Greece.

Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick, and Madelyn Cline also starred in the sequel.

One can only imagine where Craig’s delightfully-camp detective is going to be dropped next. As Rian Johnson has previously noted, every subsequent film post-Knives Out will be a standalone film/case with Benoit Blanc a la Hercule Poirot.

“There’s so many different things you can do with it. And that’s what’s fun about it,” Rian Johnson explained during an appearance on SiriusXM.

“You look at Agatha Christie’s books and it’s not like every single one is a mansion, a library, and a detective.”

“Besides setting, she also explored a bunch of different subgenres. She found a different narrative way into each of them.”

In 2021, Netflix acquired the rights to Knives Out as well as the two subsequent sequels, Knives Out 2 (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) and the forthcoming Knives Out 3, for a staggering sum of US$450 million.

The deal effectively ensured the return of both Rian Johnson as director and Daniel Craig’s reprisal as Benoit Blanc. Although it’s unclear what will become of the franchise once the trilogy-completer hits streaming queues.
