You’ve almost certainly heard of Great Oyster Bay thanks to its celebrated wine and food, tucked away on the east coast of Tasmania about halfway between Hobart and Launceston. While it’s a spot known for its impressive produce, it’s also the location of some spectacular coastline, which is where the recently advertised Eton Beach House in Swansea can be found.

Just a couple of minutes’ drive from the town centre of Swansea, Eton Beach House could well be the perfect southern holiday home, with a compellingly contemporary design that fronts directly onto the water’s edge. The property spans a sizable 2,200m², with an open expanse of grass and native flora that surrounds the main residence, allowing for uninterrupted views of the bay and Freycinet Peninsula beyond it.

The residence contains three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a couple of car parks, which is a few less than you might be used to seeing here at On The Market. However, with a more modestly sized home comes a greater emphasis on the environment around it, with the dwelling seeking to blend into the landscape rather than dominating it. To this end, Eton Beach House is successful, creating a sense of being within nature, rather than separate from it.

This impression is somewhat thanks to the drystone walls of the home, which combine with the raw timber doors and detailing to create a home that is both striking and subtle. Inside, you’ll find a large open-plan kitchen and living space (complete with a crackling fireplace), which in turn opens into the landscape via large sliding doors with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Step through these doors and you’ll find yourself on one of the outside deck areas, which is covered for an afternoon drink and has an open fireplace that shares a chimney with the living room fireplace. There’s an additional deck area closer to the high tide line where you’re able to enjoy an even better view of the water and the breeze blowing off it.

All three of the bedrooms are found in the front wing of the home, with each quite spacious boasting its own generous natural light. You’ll also find a laundry and marble bath adjacent to the bedrooms.

So if you’re in the market for a holiday home that celebrates some of the best of Tasmania’s natural beauty, or simply looking for a sea-change as you work from home, Eton Beach House could be all yours. The property has only recently hit the market via Harrison Agents Launceston, seeking expressions of interest around the $3 million mark, which represents great value if you consider an equivalent elsewhere.
