While Leica continues to manufacture some of the best digital cameras in the world (including an epic James Bond limited edition and a bulletproof Q2 model for conflict journalists), the brand is where it is today because of its century-old history. Recently, the Leitz-Park-founded camera maker has dipped its toe into the archives, resurrecting the Leica M6 film camera from 1984.

Leica understands the power of its legacy and nurtures this past by offering full servicing to any film camera up to 100 years old, but after witnessing the explosion in prices for pre-owned M series mechanical film cameras during the pandemic, the brand is giving the people what they want. Offered in a 35mm format, Leica still has all the original tooling from the 80s and beyond to create these cameras which will excite the purists who don’t mind a box-fresh body and new warranty.

With only around 175,000 examples of the original M6 manufactured from 1984 to 2002, there’s certainly going to be ample appetite for this rendition that will still be hand-made in Germany. As a result, there’s already a nine-month wait time for pre-orders of the new Leica M6 film camera, so if you’re keen on snagging one in 2023 you’d better get your skates on.
