In an effort to encourage the recently-liberated Melbournians to get out there, hit the CBD, and pump some life back into the retail + hospitality sectors as we approach Christmas, the City of Melbourne will be offering free parking from December 1st until January 3rd of 2021.

“Christmas in the city is a special time for the whole family and we are making it cheaper and easier to experience everything on offer by providing free parking,” explains the official description.

“The city will have amazing activations as part of the Christmas Festival, the best shopping in Melbourne, delicious food in our cafes and restaurants, boutique bars, and incredible coffee.”

Where on-street parking just outside the city centre will usually set you back $4/hour and $7/hour for on-street parking within the city centre, in the coming month, all you’ll have to do is:

  1. Download the free parking voucher here.
  2. Print it out.
  3. And display it on your dashboard.

This does, however, come attached with certain conditions. This free parking voucher is only valid to the City of Melbourne municipality (check out a map here in case you’re unsure), only valid in green signed areas – not red signed areas, reserved parking permit holder spots, nor disability bays, etc. – and only valid during the set dates.

Additionally, all other parking restrictions apply and will be enforced, meaning time limits and so forth are still something you need to consider. Anything beyond that is likely to incur a fine, potentially even towing depending on how unlucky you are/how egregious the transgression.

Now get out there and have some fun – you’ve earned it.
