Nike and creative firm Teague have collaborated for The Athlete’s Plane, which – as indicated by its very name – has been designed for travelling professional athletes. From pre-game prep to post-game treatment and general recovery, The Athlete’s Plane will essentially function as a mobile sports performance institute capable of mitigating the “away” factor of away games.
Described as a training room in the sky accompanied by medical facilities to prevent injuries often caused by strenuous back-to-back season schedules + insufficient/non-existent rest time, the concept of The Athlete’s Plane has been based on interviews conducted with coaches, physicians, operations staff, and even sleep specialists.
Taking these interviews directly into consideration, Nike and Teague were able to conceive of the perfect custom-made cabin tailored exactly to the needs of travelling pro athletes. According to the official site description, design efforts have focused on four key aspects of “performance innovation” (which has also informed the proposed features):
“Neutralizing the negative effects of air travel on the mind and body; bringing the training room to the sky through in-flight biometrics and analysis to accelerate injury diagnosis and treatment.”
“Fostering natural mobility by building in equipment that ensures optimal circulation and promotes healing.”
“Designing ideal sleeping conditions for individuals and sleep strategies for entire teams to maximize physical readiness.”
“Creating spaces for key mental activities and enabling in-transit film review both before and after games.”
Nike and Teague’s athlete plane will also be paired with smart apparel, accessories, and footwear to monitor player biometrics. “Vital insights” to be recorded will include sleep patterns, bloodwork, nutrition stats, physical therapy stats, and more – even the urinals will be rigged to gauge dehydration levels (as well as other things, no doubt).
