  • Raes Guesthouses, the “spin-off” to Byron Bay institution Raes on Wategos, is now open.
  • The Tamsin Johnson-designed expansion — 10 luxurious suites, two laps pools, and more — arrives in time for the original site’s 30th birthday.
  • “It’s allowed us to build on what we know guests love about Raes,” said Managing Director Jordy Catalano.

For its 30th birthday, Raes on Wategos has officially opened the doors of its second property: Raes Guesthouses.

Located mere steps away from the original site, this much-anticipated elaboration of Australia’s “foremost boutique travel destination” entails 10 sumptuous suites across two adjacent buildings, indoor common areas complete with open log fireplaces, a pair of impressive lap pools, and tropical landscaped gardens.

In each suite — designed by renowned interior designer Tamsin Johnson — you’ll find a luxurious king-sized bed with a bespoke bedhead, accompanied by sweeping views of either Wategos Beach or the serene garden.

Many of these rooms feature private balconies with sun lounges, while others flaunt custom French linen canopies. The property as a whole radiates a “relaxed Mediterranean feel,” with earthen pastels of blue and green, mid-century lighting, hand-painted joinery, alongside vintage-inspired pieces throughout.

“I wanted to build on the soul of the original Raes property, while thoughtfully adapting to the unique architecture of this space,” said Johnson.

“The style hints at Spanish-Hollywood and Balearic influences, with added colour and a playful coastal aesthetic to set the property apart from the original hotel.”

“Strong materials like marble tie the two properties together, reinforcing a sense of shared personality. Maintaining Raes communal spirit was essential, creating a space that feels inviting and familiar to guests.”

As for dining, Executive Chef Jason Saxby has introduced a new menu that’ll be updated regularly, and available throughout Raes Guesthouses — served in-room, within the communal dining room, or poolside.

Inspired by the hotel’s oceanfront surroundings, opening highlights include chilled oysters with Raes signature Australiana dressing, swordfish katsu sandwich, spanner crab tagliolini, as well as a creative twist on the prawn cocktail (locally sourced, of course).

Saxby’s negroni-soaked frozen watermelon also promises to be a refreshing treat you’ll enjoy poolside.

But in the unlikely event this isn’t to your taste, guests can still enjoy direct access to the two-hatted Raes Dining Room hosted at the original site; alongside the alfresco Cellar Bar and Raes Spa.

“Raes Guesthouses have allowed us to build on what we know guests love about Raes: warmth, elegance, and generous hospitality,” said Managing Director Jordy Catalano.

“We’re excited to introduce a fresh yet familiar take on luxury, just in time to celebrate our 30th birthday… it allows us to meet growing demand while preserving the boutique, intimate nature of Raes, with a continued commitment to providing an exceptional guest experience.”

Bookings are now open for Raes Guesthouses at 1 Marine Parade, Byron Bay NSW. Find out more below.
